Celebrating the life of

Sister Mary Alvin Seubott, R.S.M.

April 10, 1935 - January 06, 2017

Sister Mary Alvin Seubott, R.S.M.

Sr. M. Alvin Seubott, R.S.M.

Sr. Alvin quietly passed away on January 6, 2017, at Mercy Convent in Savannah, GA.  Sr. Alvin was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. She attended Mt. St. Agnes High School, and Mt. St. Agnes College, receiving a B.A. in Education.  She later went on to obtain a M.Ed. in special Education (specifically the psychology of emotionally disturbed children) from Loyola College in Maryland and at Boston College.  “I am grateful for the higher education I received, I credit it with some of the success in my field, but really, we had to learn by doing.”

Sister Alvin entered the religious life of the Sisters of Mercy in 1953.

Sister Alvin began her work as a Sister of Mercy, as a teacher at the Shrine of the Sacred Heart, and later worked at Villa Maria both in Baltimore, MD. Later she came to Savannah, teaching 8th grade at Nativity of Our Lord School, as well as beginning a 42-year long ministry of service, at St. Mary’s Home on Victory Drive.  This home was originally established by the Sisters of Mercy there in 1938 with eighty girls in residence.

Sr. Alvin, as Administrator, worked tirelessly on behalf of the children.  She lobbied vigorously in the state capital for funding and safe child legislation; was a founding member of the Georgia Association of Home and Services for Children; served on the Governor’s Committee on Children and Youth Services, as well as many other gubernatorial appointments for the welfare of the children of Georgia. All the while, Sr. Alvin worked long and steady hours on end for the children, while encouraging the growth and development of her staff.

Along with Sr. Johanna Maguire, RSM and Sr. Theresa Mary Sumner, RSM, this dynamic trio were all things to all children.  In the end, it was always about the children-even if the work was challenging, it was always rewarding.  Other constant members of the team were the many dogs and various pets to be found at St. Mary’s on any given day.  The children adored the animals as did the Sisters.  To this day, many of the children who lived and thrived at St. Mary’s come back and thank the Sisters for the guidance and support they received while in residence.

Sister Alvin received The Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice  award from Pope John Paul II on October 6, 1994, for her service on behalf of the children at St. Mary’s.   Known as the "Cross of Honour" it was established by Pope  Leo XIII on July 17, 1888. It is the highest medal that can be awarded to a lay person by the Pope.

Sr. Alvin once wrote:  Mother Catherine McAuley (Foundress of the Sisters of Mercy) said, “The Lord will not leave us lacking in the means to do His work.”  This has been evidenced in my Mercy ministry in general, and in particular with the troubled children and their families at St. Mary’s (Savannah).  In serving the abused child, the substance addicted child, and others to who life has dealt harsh blows, I realize the privilege of being a Sister of Mercy is truly a beautiful and rare God-given gift.

Sr. Alvin is preceded in death by her parents, Alvin and Elizabeth Seubott, her sister, Sr. Janet Seubott, RSM. She is survived by her brother Alvin J. Seubott(Sherian), Jeff Seubott(nephew), Laura(Josh) Vogel(niece), 4 great-nephews, lifelong friends in the work at St. Mary’s-Fr. Patrick O’Brien, Sr. Johanna Maguire, R.S.M., the Sisters of Mercy, and staff of Mercy Convent and of course, her ever faithful and cherished dog, Abby.

Visitation will be held Monday, January 9 from 4-6 pm, with rosary to follow at the St. Mary’s Chapel at the Catholic Pastoral Center (formerly St. Mary’s Home) 2170 E. Victory Drive, Savannah.

The Mass of Christian Burial will take place at the St. Mary’s Chapel at the Catholic Pastoral Center (formerly St. Mary’s Home) 2170 E. Victory Drive, Savannah on Tuesday, January 10, at 10:00 am, Savannah, GA.

Sr. Alvin will be laid to final rest in Baltimore, MD., in the family plot alongside her sister, Sr. Janet Seubott, RSM.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mercy Convent (where Sr. Alvin last resided), 11801 McAuley Drive, Savannah, GA. 31419

GUEST BOOK

I was at St. Mary’s from I think 84 or 85 to 87 or 88... I was always in trouble while I lived there, but I learned many life lessons from Sr. Alvin and the rest of the nuns there. Sr. Monica, Sr. Carol, Sr. Joseph, Sr. Terese Mary, Ms Edith, Coach Scandrick, and many more. Those were special years for me there. It really was like my second family. Sr Alvin always knew how to comfort me when times were hard. She was also probably the most stern nun I ever met when she had to be. I’ll always love you Sr. And will miss you. You will always have a special place in my heart. God bless you.

I was at St Mary's from 1983-1989 under Sr. Alvin's care and guidance. I am now 45 and a breast cancer survivor just like she was. So, not only did she educate survivors from child abuse but represented to future breast cancer survivors as well- She was the living educator to us girls in so many ways.....Peace well earned Sr Alvin! love Rosa Mantlow

I met Sister during the closing of Saint Mary's home. My sisters and I lived there from 1954 til June of 65. I wish she had been there during those years. Sounds like we would have loved her like we loved some of nuns we had.May sister rest in peace.

I met Sister Alvin in 1970. She clearly loved the children of St. Mary's as her own: but, she touched the lives of so many others, as well. Although I wasn't a resident of St. Mary's, Sister Alvin opened her heart and helped me when I was a struggling teen and needed guidance. This world is truly a better place because of the love and devotion of Sister Alvin.
